Why your emissions didn't calculate (and how to fix it)

Sometimes a file uploads successfully but the emissions never appear on your dashboard. That almost always means the calculation step couldn't complete for some rows — usually because a piece of context is missing, like the location's region or a matching emission factor. This article covers the most common causes and how to fix each one.

An upload and a calculation are two separate steps. A file can import perfectly and still produce no emissions if the calculation can't find the information it needs. Check the Audit Page to see which rows calculated and which didn't.

Add a country and state to your location

Electricity emissions depend on where the electricity was used — the same kWh produces very different emissions in Victoria than in Tasmania, because each grid has its own emission factor (the conversion rate between activity and emissions). If you see "This location has no region set", the location the data belongs to is missing its country or state.

Open the location's settings

Find the facility or entity the upload was assigned to in your organisational structure.

Add the country and state

Fill in both fields — the state matters because electricity factors are set per region, not per country.

Re-upload the file

Upload the same file again so the calculation runs with the region in place.

Resolve rows with no matching emission factor

If you see "No emission factors found", NetNada has no factor for the particular combination in your data — for example, an unusual fuel type in a region we don't hold a factor for, or a calculation method that doesn't apply to that category. Two ways forward:

  • Choose a different calculation method — for example, switch between activity-based and spend-based input if your data supports it
  • Add a custom emission factor — if you have a supplier-specific or product-specific factor, add it to your factor library and re-run the upload. See custom emission factors.

Align your units

If you see "We couldn't convert units", some rows use units that don't match what the category expects — a classic example is a file mixing kWh and MWh, or using an abbreviation NetNada doesn't recognise. Pick one unit, convert every row to it in your spreadsheet, make sure the unit column says exactly that unit, and re-upload.

Common variants like "kgs" for kg or "tonnes" for tonne are recognised automatically — but staying consistent within one file avoids surprises.

Set up your on-site solar system before uploading solar data

Solar generation data only calculates if NetNada knows the location actually has an on-site solar system — otherwise there's nothing to attribute the generation to. If you see "On-site solar system not configured", add the system under Settings > Energy Systems for that location, then re-upload the file.

Run a recalculation after editing rows

Editing a row — say, correcting its category or units — saves the change but doesn't recalculate emissions on its own. Recalculation is a deliberate second step so you can make several edits and then recalculate once.

Edit the rows that need fixing

Each edited row is marked as pending recalculation. Your edits are saved immediately.

Click Recalculate

Run Recalculate on the file. If you're told there's nothing to recalculate, no rows are pending — edit a row first, then try again.

Review the results

Check the updated emissions on the Audit Page. If a recalculation fails, your edits are still saved — just run it again.
Only rows that are unmapped or pending recalculation can have their mapping changed. Rows that have already calculated successfully are locked to protect your audit trail — if one of those genuinely needs to change, delete and re-upload the file with corrected data.

When to contact support

If emissions still don't appear after adding regions, aligning units, and recalculating — or a recalculation fails repeatedly — contact help@netnada.com.au with the file name and the location it was uploaded to. Rows with very large pending recalculations sometimes need a hand from our side.

FAQ

My file imported successfully — why is the dashboard still showing zero?
Importing and calculating are separate steps. Check the Audit Page for rows that didn't calculate, and work through the causes above — missing region and unmatched factors are the two most common.
Do I lose my edits if a recalculation fails?
No. Edits are saved the moment you make them, independently of recalculation. If a recalculation fails, simply run it again — your changes are intact.
Why does electricity need a state, not just a country?
Grid emission factors are published per region — in Australia, each state's grid has its own factor. Without a state, NetNada can't pick the right factor, so the calculation can't run.
Can I use my own emission factor instead of NetNada's?
Yes. Custom factors — from supplier declarations, life-cycle assessments, or product declarations — can be added to your factor library and take priority for matching data. See the custom emission factors article for how.
Why can't I change the mapping on a row that already calculated?
Calculated rows are locked so your reported figures stay consistent with an auditable trail. To change one, delete the file and re-upload it with the corrected data, or contact support if only a handful of rows are affected.
