How to create and manage reporting periods

Last updated: 10 April 2026

Reporting Periods Carbon Inventory

A reporting period defines the time window for your carbon inventory โ€” typically aligned with your financial year. All emissions data, tasks, and reports in NetNada are linked to a reporting period. Navigate to Identify > Reporting Periods to manage them.

In this article, you'll learn how to:

  • Create a new reporting period
  • Edit reporting period details
  • Understand the three statuses: Open, Preparing, and Closed
  • Close a reporting period to lock your carbon inventory
For companies doing mandatory climate disclosure, the reporting period must align with your financial cycle. This is a one-for-one match โ€” your emissions reporting period should cover the same dates as your financial reporting period.

Creating a Reporting Period

1

Navigate to Reporting Periods

Go to Identify > Reporting Periods and click Add Reporting Period.
2

Enter the period name

Give it a descriptive name such as "FY25" or "Calendar Year 2025". This name will appear across tasks, reports, and dashboards.
3

Set the start and end dates

Define the first and last day of the period. For an Australian financial year, this would be 01/07/2024 to 30/06/2025.
4

Add a description (optional)

Include any notes about this period โ€” for example, whether it's your first inventory or if there are known data gaps.
5

Set the status

Choose Open for active data collection, Preparing if you're setting up ahead of time, or Closed if the period is complete.

Reporting Period Statuses

Each reporting period has one of three statuses that controls how it behaves in the platform:

StatusMeaningWhen to use
OpenActive period. Shown on dashboards by default. Data can be uploaded and edited.During active data collection and measurement.
PreparingFuture period. Data collection can begin but the period is not yet the primary view. When setting up tasks and boundaries ahead of the reporting window.
ClosedLocked period. Data is frozen and cannot be changed. Acts as your finalised carbon inventory. After measurement is complete and the inventory has been reviewed or assured.
Closing a reporting period locks the data. This is equivalent to freezing your carbon inventory. Make sure all data has been reviewed and any corrections applied before changing the status to Closed.

Editing a Reporting Period

You can edit any reporting period by clicking Edit on the reporting periods page. Editable fields include the period name, start date, end date, description, and status.

Common reasons to edit a reporting period:

  • Correcting the date range after initial setup
  • Changing the status from Preparing to Open when data collection begins
  • Closing the period after your inventory has been assured
  • Adding notes about data quality or scope exclusions

FAQ

Can I have multiple reporting periods open at the same time?
Yes. You might have FY25 open for active measurement while FY26 is in Preparing status. Your dashboards will default to showing the Open period.
What happens to tasks when I close a reporting period?
Tasks linked to a closed period remain visible for audit purposes but can no longer be modified. Any incomplete tasks should be resolved before closing.
Can I reopen a closed reporting period?
Yes, you can change the status back to Open if corrections are needed. However, this should be done carefully, as it unlocks the data and may affect reports or disclosures that reference the closed period.
Does the reporting period need to match my financial year?
For mandatory climate disclosure (such as AASB S2), yes โ€” the reporting period must align with your financial year. For voluntary reporting, you can use any time window that suits your organisation.
